WHAT IS JIVAMUKTI YOGA?

Yoga Dojo is Australia's only affiliated Jivamukti Yoga Studio.

Jivamukti Yoga is a style of yoga that was created by David Life and Sharon Gannon in New York in1984. It integrates the physical, philosophical and spiritual aspects of Yoga.

The name Jivamukti is an adaptation of the Sanskrit word jivanmuktih, where ‘jiva’ means the individual living soul, and ‘mukti’ means liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth. Thus the term Jivamukti means "liberation while living".

The core philosophical foundations of Jivamukti yoga are expressed through five tenets. These are:

  • Ahimsa: A nonviolent, compassionate lifestyle extending to other animals, the environment and all living beings
  • Bhakti: Acknowledgment that self-realization is the goal of all yoga practices
  • Dhyana: Meditation: connecting to that eternal unchanging reality within.
  • Nada: The development of a sound body and mind through deep listening
  • Shastra: Study of the ancient yogic teachings

Jivamukti yoga is a physically strong and intellectually stimulating style of yoga. Classes include Vinyasa (flowing asana sequences), hands-on adjustments, Pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation, chanting, Yoga philosophy and deep relaxation. To keep the practice inspiring, asana sequences are ever-changing and music plays an important role in the class. Classes are 60-90 minutes and open to all levels.

Jivamukti Yoga is one of the nine internationally recognized styles of Yoga. The other eight being: Ashtanga, Iyengar, Viniyoga, Sivananda, Integral, Bikram, Kripalu, and Kundalini.
